Whangamata Set for a Big Week: Markets, Live Music, and Sport on the Coromandel

Whangamata is gearing up for one of its busiest weeks of the season, with a packed programme of events set to draw locals and visitors alike to the town’s beaches, parks, and community venues.

From the Saturday morning markets at Williamson Park to live music on Port Road and a full slate of winter sports fixtures, organisers say the coming days offer something for everyone — and a welcome boost for local businesses as the cooler months set in.

Markets and community gatherings

The Whangamata Market returns to Williamson Park on Saturday from 8am to 1pm, with more than 60 stalls expected to line the reserve off Port Road. Organisers say the winter edition will feature fresh produce, artisan baking, local honey, and handmade crafts, alongside coffee carts and food trucks.

Market coordinator Raewyn Fletcher said the event had grown steadily since it was relaunched and now draws stallholders from across the Coromandel and as far afield as Hamilton.

“We’ve got a real mix this month — everything from Coromandel oysters to hand-knitted merino from a couple up the coast,” Fletcher said. “It’s a great morning out for families, and it’s a chance to support the small operators who make this town tick.”

The Whangamata Community Library on Beach Road also hosts its monthly book sale on Saturday morning, with proceeds going towards new children’s titles.

Live music on Port Road

Music lovers are well catered for, with the Whangamata RSA on Port Road hosting a Friday night set from local covers band The Harbour Lights, starting at 7pm. On Sunday afternoon, the Whangamata Club plays host to a relaxed acoustic session featuring singer-songwriter Tama Rangi, with doors open from 3pm.

Club secretary Maree Dougherty said the Sunday sessions had become a fixture on the local calendar.

“It’s a nice way to wind down the weekend — a bit of live music, a bite to eat, and a catch-up with mates,” Dougherty said. “We’re seeing a lot of regulars come back each month, and it’s bringing new faces through the door too.”

Sporting fixtures

On the sporting front, the Whangamata Rugby Club hosts a home fixture at the Boyd Road grounds on Saturday afternoon, with kick-off at 2.30pm. The club is encouraging supporters to turn out in numbers and stay on for the after-match function.

Meanwhile, the Whangamata Surf Life Saving Club runs its junior surf training session at the main beach on Sunday morning from 9am, weather permitting. Club captain Josh Herewini said conditions were looking favourable.

“The swell’s meant to ease off by the weekend, so it should be a good one for the younger crew,” Herewini said. “We always welcome new families along — just bring a towel and plenty of enthusiasm.”

The Whangamata Bowling Club on Hetherington Road also holds its popular have-a-go open day on Sunday from 10am, with free coaching for beginners and a sausage sizzle to follow.

What’s next and roading notes

Looking ahead, the Thames-Coromandel District Council has confirmed that routine maintenance work on the Port Road footpath will continue into next week, with minor delays expected for pedestrians. The council is advising motorists travelling along SH25 into Whangamata to allow extra time on Sunday afternoon as holidaymakers head home.

Council spokesperson Lisa Marsh said the district was keen to support the town’s community events.

“Whangamata has a fantastic calendar of grassroots events, and council is pleased to back these where we can through our community grants and facilities,” Marsh said. “We’d encourage everyone to get out and enjoy what’s on offer.”

For those planning a quieter weekend, the Whangamata harbour remains a popular spot for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, with the boat ramp off Moana Anu Anu Avenue open as usual.
