Where to Stay in Whangamata

Whangamata offers accommodation to suit every budget and style, from basic campgrounds and motor camps through to luxury beachfront holiday homes. The key is booking early — particularly for the peak summer season from mid-December through January when the town fills up fast.

Types of Accommodation

Holiday Homes & Baches

The classic Whangamata experience is renting a bach (holiday home). Hundreds of privately owned baches are available for short-term rental through platforms like Bookabach, Bachcare, and Airbnb. These range from simple, no-frills cottages to modern, architect-designed beachfront homes sleeping 10 or more.

Motels & Motor Lodges

Several motels line Port Road and the streets near the beach. These offer comfortable, self-contained units with cooking facilities — ideal for families or couples who want convenience without the commitment of a full house rental. Most motels have parking and are within walking distance of the beach and shops.

Campgrounds & Motor Camps

Whangamata has several well-equipped campgrounds offering powered and unpowered sites, cabins and tourist flats. Camping is hugely popular with Kiwi families and is the most affordable way to enjoy a Whangamata holiday.

Airbnb & Short-Term Rentals

The Airbnb market in Whangamata is thriving, with options ranging from private rooms in local homes to entire houses. Airbnb can be particularly good value for small groups or couples, and often includes a more personal, local experience.

Best Areas to Stay

  • Beachfront: Maximum convenience for beach lovers — walk out your door and onto the sand
  • Central (Port Road area): Close to shops, restaurants and cafes
  • South end: Quieter, family-friendly with easy beach access
  • Harbour side: Popular with boaties and fishers

Booking Tips

For peak season (Christmas/New Year), book at least 3-6 months in advance. Many regular visitors rebook their favourite bach for the following year before they even leave. If you are flexible on dates, the shoulder seasons (November, March-April) offer excellent weather at much lower prices.
