Getting from Taupo to Whangamata
Lake Taupo sits at the heart of the North Island, making it a natural jumping-off point for a Coromandel beach holiday. The drive to Whangamata is approximately 230 kilometres and takes 2.5 to 3 hours, heading north through the Waikato farmlands and across the Hauraki Plains before crossing the Coromandel Range. The route passes through some of New Zealand’s most quintessentially rural scenery — rolling green hills, dairy farms, and small country towns.
Distance & Drive Time
- Via Tirau and Matamata (recommended): 230 km, 2.5 to 3 hours
- Via Rotorua and Tauranga (alternative): 270 km, 3 to 3.5 hours
- Road type: all sealed state highways
Recommended Route: Via Tirau, Matamata and Paeroa
The most direct route heads north through the Waikato inland:
- Taupo to Tirau via SH1 — Head north on SH1 for 85 km (about 1 hour). The road passes through pine forests and rolling pastoral country. Tirau is the quirky antiques and corrugated iron sculpture town — the giant corrugated iron sheep and sheepdog buildings are impossible to miss from the highway.
- Tirau to Matamata via SH27 — Turn east onto SH27 for a straight, flat 30 km drive through dairy country (25 minutes). Matamata is the gateway to Hobbiton if you want to visit the Shire on the way to the beach.
- Matamata to Te Aroha to Paeroa via SH24/SH26 — Cross the flat Hauraki Plains (50 km, 40 minutes). Te Aroha is a lovely small spa town with hot mineral pools. Paeroa is the home of L&P — stop for a photo with the giant L&P bottle.
- Paeroa to Waihi via SH2 — Drive through the stunning Karangahake Gorge (20 km, 15 minutes). Cliff faces, river crossings, and gold mining history.
- Waihi to Whangamata via SH25 — The final 30 km over the Hikuai Hill (30 minutes). Fill up with fuel in Waihi.
Alternative Route: Via Rotorua and Tauranga
If you prefer a slightly more scenic route, or want to visit Rotorua’s geothermal attractions on the way, head east on SH5 from Taupo to Rotorua (80 km, 1 hour), then northwest to Tauranga on SH36 (63 km, 55 minutes), and north on SH2 to Waihi. This route is about 40 km longer but passes through geothermal country, the Bay of Plenty orchards, and the coastal city of Tauranga. It works well if you are combining a Rotorua visit with a Whangamata beach holiday.
Things to Do Before You Leave Taupo
If you haven’t already, don’t leave Taupo without seeing these highlights:
- Huka Falls — Just 2 minutes off SH1, north of Taupo. New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction, where 220,000 litres of water per second thunder through a narrow canyon. Free to visit, there is a short walk from the car park to the viewing platform. You will pass this on your way out of town heading north.
- Craters of the Moon — A geothermal walkway near Wairakei, about 5 minutes north of Taupo ($8 adult entry). Steaming craters, mud pools, and fumaroles on a 45-minute loop walk through a surreal volcanic landscape.
- Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings — Only accessible by boat on Lake Taupo. Massive carvings of an ancestral Maori figure on a cliff face. Several boat tours operate from the Taupo marina.
Best Stops Along the Way
- Tirau (1 hour) — Browse the antique and homeware shops in the corrugated iron buildings. Good coffee at multiple cafes on the main street.
- Matamata (1.5 hours) — Hobbiton Movie Set Tours operate from here. The set from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films is preserved in its entirety on a working sheep farm. Tours take about 2 hours and must be booked in advance. Even if you are not visiting Hobbiton, Matamata has a pleasant main street with cafes.
- Te Aroha (2 hours) — A hidden gem that most travellers drive past. The Te Aroha Domain has hot mineral pools (both public and private) fed by natural springs. The Mokena Geyser in the domain is the world’s only hot soda water geyser. Allow 30-60 minutes for a soak.
- Paeroa (2.5 hours) — Home of L&P (Lemon and Paeroa), New Zealand’s famous soft drink. The giant L&P bottle sculpture on the main road is one of the country’s most photographed roadside attractions.
- Karangahake Gorge (between Paeroa and Waihi) — The Windows Walk is a 45-minute loop through historic gold mining tunnels with windows cut into the rock overlooking the Ohinemuri River gorge below. A highlight of any Coromandel road trip.
- Waihi (2.5 hours) — Look into the massive Martha Mine open pit from the town lookout. This operating gold mine has been producing since 1878. Fill up with fuel here — it is the last reliable stop before Whangamata.
Fuel Stops
Fill up in Taupo before departure. The next good fuel stops are at Tirau, Matamata, Paeroa, and Waihi. Always fuel up in Waihi before the final stretch over the Hikuai Hill to Whangamata.
