Whangamata ANZAC Dawn Service: Times, Location and Commemorations

ANZAC Dawn Service in Whangamata

Whangamata holds an ANZAC Day Dawn Service each year on 25 April, commemorating the service and sacrifice of New Zealand’s armed forces. The service is a moving community event attended by locals, returned servicemen and women, and visitors.

Time & Location

The Dawn Service typically begins at 6:00am on 25 April at the Whangamata War Memorial. A civic service usually follows later in the morning, often around 10:00am or 11:00am.

What to Expect

  • Pre-dawn gathering at the War Memorial
  • The Last Post and Reveille
  • Wreath laying by RSA members, community groups and individuals
  • Prayers and readings
  • One minute’s silence
  • National anthem

After the Service

Following the Dawn Service, the Whangamata RSA typically opens for a traditional ANZAC breakfast. This is a chance to share stories, meet veterans and enjoy a warm meal on what is usually a cool autumn morning.

Tips

  • Dress warmly — late April mornings in Whangamata are cool
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes before the service starts
  • Poppies are available from the RSA in the days leading up to ANZAC Day
  • The service is open to everyone — visitors are welcome
