Whangamata itself does not have natural hot pools or hot springs in town. However, there are excellent hot pool experiences within driving distance on the Coromandel Peninsula and in the wider region.

Nearest Hot Pools

Hot Water Beach (45 minutes)

The most famous hot water experience near Whangamata. At Hot Water Beach (near Hahei), you can dig your own hot pool in the sand as geothermally heated water seeps up through the beach. This works best in the two hours either side of low tide. Bring a spade or hire one from the nearby shop.

Te Aroha Mineral Spas (1 hour 15 minutes)

Te Aroha has the world’s only hot soda water geyser and offers public hot mineral pools in the beautiful Te Aroha Domain. Private and public pools are available.

Athenree Hot Springs (1 hour)

Located near Waihi Beach, Athenree Hot Springs is a family-friendly facility with hot mineral pools and a camping ground.

Miranda Hot Springs (1 hour 30 minutes)

On the Firth of Thames, Miranda offers a large thermal mineral pool complex.

The Sauna Project Whangamata

While not a hot pool, The Sauna Project in Whangamata offers a mobile sauna experience — a unique way to warm up, particularly in the cooler months.
