Surfing Whangamata: Breaks, Lessons and Beginner Guide

Surfing in Whangamata

Whangamata is one of New Zealand’s premier surf towns, famous for its consistent beach breaks and the legendary left-hand bar break at the harbour entrance. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced surfer, Whangamata has waves for you.

Best Whangamata Surf Breaks

  • Whangamata Bar — The famous left-hander at the harbour mouth. A world-class wave when conditions align (large east swell, offshore winds). For experienced surfers only — strong currents.
  • Main Beach — Multiple peaks along the 4km beach. Consistent beach breaks suitable for all levels. The best beginner spots are in the middle sections of the beach.
  • South End — Can produce good banks with more shelter from northerly winds.

Surf Lessons

  • Whangamata Surf School — Lessons for beginners and intermediates, board and wetsuit hire included
  • Chances Surf NZ — Surf coaching and lessons

Board & Wetsuit Hire

  • Whangamata Surf Shop — Board and wetsuit hire, plus gear sales

Best Conditions

  • Best swells: East to northeast swells in the 1–2m range
  • Best winds: Light westerly or southwest (offshore)
  • Best season: Autumn (March–May) for consistent swells and fewer crowds; summer for warmer water but bigger crowds
  • Water temperature: 16–22°C depending on season

Surf Safety in Whangamata

  • Swim and surf between the flags when lifeguards are on duty
  • The Whangamata Bar break has strong currents — not for beginners
  • Watch for rip currents, especially at the ends of the beach
  • Use sunscreen — the UV is intense even on cloudy days

Surf Culture

The Whangamata Surf Life Saving Club is the heart of the local surf community, running patrols during summer and hosting surf competitions throughout the year.
