The drive from Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula is one of New Zealand’s most popular weekend escapes — and for good reason. In roughly two to three hours you swap motorway traffic for golden beaches, kauri forest, hot springs and twisting coastal roads. This guide gives you the exact route, honest drive times to every major Coromandel town, the best stops to break the journey, and the things locals wish first-timers knew before setting off.

⏱️ Drive time: ~1h45m to Thames, 2–3h to most towns • 💲 Cost: ~$25–40 petrol one-way (car) • 🛣️ Route: SH1 → SH2 → SH25 • 📍 Gateway: Thames
The route at a glance
There is essentially one main way onto the Coromandel by car, and the gateway town is Thames. From central Auckland you head south on State Highway 1, branch onto State Highway 2 at Pokeno, then turn onto State Highway 25 at Mangatarata. SH25 carries you up the western coast to Thames, after which it loops the whole peninsula. From Thames you choose your direction: north-west toward Coromandel Town, or east over the hill toward Whitianga, Hot Water Beach and Whangamata.
Total distance to Thames is about 118 km; Coromandel Town is roughly 167 km. The often-quoted “2 hours 24 minutes” applies to Coromandel Town — but realistic door-to-door times are longer once you account for SH25’s bends and summer traffic.
Distance & drive time to each Coromandel town

Best stops to break the drive
Pokeno (pies & ice cream)

The unofficial last “big” stop before the peninsula. Pokeno is famous for its bakeries and ice cream parlours lining the main street — a quick, easy fuel-and-snack stop about 50 minutes out of Auckland.

Miranda Hot Springs & the Firth of Thames
A worthwhile detour off SH2 near Kaiaua: thermal pools, a famous shorebird coast, and seafood shops. Adds about 20 minutes but makes a relaxing leg-stretch with kids.

Thames (last full services)

Thames is the gateway and your last chance for a supermarket, full-service petrol, ATMs and a proper café strip before the smaller coastal towns. Top up the tank here — fuel further round the peninsula is pricier and stations close early.

Which way round the peninsula?
At Thames you make a choice. For Coromandel Town, Colville and the wild northern tip, continue on SH25 up the scenic, narrow western coast. For the popular eastern beaches — Whitianga, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach — take the Kopu–Hikuai road (SH25A) over the ranges, which is the faster cross-peninsula route. Whangamata, Tairua and Pauanui all sit on this eastern side.
Planning a multi-day loop? Many visitors drive up the west coast and return down the east (or vice-versa) to see both sides. Our Coromandel Peninsula local’s guide and things-to-do pillar map out the best of each.
Local tips before you go
- SH25 is winding. Beyond Thames the roads are narrow, hilly and slow — don’t trust flat motorway averages. Allow extra time and pull over to let locals pass.
- Fill up in Thames. There’s no 24-hour petrol once you’re round the peninsula, and small-town stations close early.
- Summer & long weekends = traffic. The Friday-night exodus from Auckland and the Sunday return can add an hour or more. Travelling mid-morning or after dinner helps.
- Check the road status. SH25A has been repaired after a major 2023 slip; still, check NZTA Waka Kotahi for live closures before long weekends.
- Tides matter at the beaches. Hot Water Beach only works around low tide — see our tide times and weather pages to plan your arrival.
Don’t want to drive? Take the ferry
In the warmer months the 360 Discovery ferry runs a scenic ~2-hour cruise from downtown Auckland across the Hauraki Gulf to Hannafords Wharf, with a complimentary shuttle into Coromandel Town. It’s a relaxing alternative if you’re staying in Coromandel Town and don’t need a car — but for exploring the wider peninsula and east-coast beaches, driving gives you far more freedom. Check current sailing schedules and prices with the operator before booking, as the service is seasonal.
