Hikuai to Whangamata Road

The road from Hikuai to Whangamata is State Highway 25 (SH25), running approximately 20 kilometres through the Coromandel ranges. This is the main access road into Whangamata from the west and is the route used by most visitors arriving from Auckland, Hamilton, Thames or Tauranga.
Road Conditions

SH25 between Hikuai and Whangamata is a well-maintained two-lane highway, but it does wind through hilly terrain with some tight corners. The road is generally in good condition but can be affected by:
- Slips and road closures after heavy rain
- Flooding during severe weather events
- Heavy traffic during holiday weekends (especially Christmas, New Year and Beach Hop)

Alternative Routes if Road is Closed
If SH25 between Hikuai and Whangamata is closed:
- Via Waihi: Continue on SH25A to Kopu, then SH25/SH2 through Paeroa to Waihi, then SH25 south to Whangamata. Adds approximately 45–60 minutes.
- From Tauranga direction: SH2 to Waihi, then SH25 to Whangamata
SH25A (Kopu-Hikuai Road)
Note: SH25A is a separate road connecting Kopu (near Thames) to Hikuai. This road was significantly upgraded and realigned in recent years. If travelling from Thames or Auckland via the Kopu junction, you will use SH25A to reach Hikuai, then SH25 to reach Whangamata.
Tips
- Allow extra time during holiday periods — the road gets very busy
- Drive to conditions, especially in wet weather
- Fill up with petrol before the drive — there are no petrol stations between Hikuai and Whangamata
- Check road status before departing, particularly after storms
