The drive from Whangamata to Thames takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes via State Highway 25A (the Kopu-Hikuai Road), covering around 75 kilometres. Thames is the main service town for the Coromandel Peninsula and has the nearest hospital, larger shops and government services.

Whangamata to Thames Route

  1. Head out of Whangamata on Waihi Road / SH25
  2. Turn left onto SH25A at Hikuai — the Kopu-Hikuai Road
  3. Cross the ranges via SH25A (winding road through bush)
  4. Arrive at Kopu, then follow SH25 north into Thames

Road Conditions: Whangamata to Thames

SH25A is a winding road through the Coromandel Range. It has been upgraded in recent years but still has tight corners and steep gradients. Allow extra time in wet weather. The road can be closed after heavy rain due to slips — always check the NZTA journey planner or Waka Kotahi website before travelling.

Tips for the Whangamata to Thames Journey

  • Fill up with petrol in Whangamata before leaving — fuel can be cheaper in Thames but the range road uses more fuel
  • Drive carefully on SH25A, especially in wet conditions
  • If SH25A is closed, the alternative route is via Waihi and Paeroa (SH25 to SH2), adding about 30 minutes
