The drive from Whangamata to Whitianga takes approximately 1 hour 40 minutes via the inland route through Hikuai and Kopu, covering around 110 kilometres. This journey takes you through some of the Coromandel’s most scenic landscapes.

Recommended Route

  1. Head out of Whangamata on SH25 towards Hikuai
  2. Turn left onto SH25A at Hikuai towards Kopu
  3. At Kopu, follow SH25 north through Thames
  4. Continue on SH25 along the coast to Whitianga (via Tapu and Coroglen) or take the faster SH25A from Kopu direct to Whitianga

Alternative: Coastal Route via Tairua

A more scenic but slower option is to drive north on SH25 from Whangamata via Tairua and then across to Whitianga via the 309 Road or continue up the coast. This adds time but passes through beautiful coastal scenery.

  • Tairua — Coastal town with cafes and a beautiful harbour
  • Hot Water Beach — Dig your own hot pool in the sand (tide dependent)
  • Cathedral Cove — Iconic natural rock arch and beach (Hahei)
  • The 309 Road — Gravel road with the Waiau Kauri Grove and waterfall

Tips

  • All routes involve winding roads — allow plenty of time and drive to conditions
  • Check road status before departing, especially after heavy rain
  • Fill up with petrol in Whangamata or Thames
